THE VOICE OF ILLINOIS CYCLISTS HEARD DOWN IN SPRINGFIELD

I implore all my biking friends to read this article. It is great news to see the lawmakers in our great state protecting the rights—and lives!—of us cyclists. House Bill 5912 is an important first step. The job is not down, however! We have to keep fighting.

Bill 5912 was born from the tragic death of 68 year old Army veteran, Dennis Jurs.   He was killed when he collided with a vehicle in Kane County last year. The incident happened at an intersection where north and southbound drivers have stop signs but east and westbound vehicles do not.

The driver was ticketed, but 16th Judicial Circuit Judge Donald M. Tegeler Jr. dismissed the case—finding that there were conflicting rulings showing that bikes did not have the same rights as automobiles under Illinois law.

Props to Attorney Michael S. Keating—an avid cyclist—who crafted Bill 5912.
